DARE to Invest in YOURSELF

Although the economy is still struggling to right itself, individually, we are all eager to be successful and happy every day. A large part of being empowered to create success and joy is simply the positive point of view that we need to be demanding of ourselves. Yes, right now, the glass may BE half empty. And yes, that can be frightening. Our job, however, is really not to focus on the glass at all, it is to look within ourselves and see how much our cup runneth over when it comes to the skills, services and amazing gifts that we offer those around us.

Thus, staying fulfilled so that we can offer 100% of ourselves and our enthusiasm, must be our number one priority. There are some simple decisions we can make each day to be sure that we stay on a path of positivity and service to others. This may not equal dollars right now, but it does make perfect sense! With an attitude of service and appreciation (even toward ourselves), we will be in the best position for success on all levels as the economy repairs itself.

So what are the do’s and don’ts to be brimming with optimism every day? The don’ts are easy. Although it would be foolish to avoid the media completely, definitely refuse to absorb it with a tarnished silver spoon full of expectation and disappointment. Your PERSONAL success is NOT dependent on what CNBC or the Wall Street Journal have to say. Likewise, those around you may be experiencing some very difficult decisions and situations. Be supportive and encouraging, but in your own heart, an attitude of appreciation will always buoy you forward.

So now the DO’s. HOW do we create and grow that attitude of appreciation? Investing in yourself is an amazing and rejuvenating experience. It is the one investment that can NEVER fail to deliver. Sadly, it’s likely that the first thing to go in your business budget is education, personal development or networking, but these are the LAST things you should give up. Why? Because, they are food for the soul - a hungry soul is not strong enough to see solutions and new opportunities that may be right in front of you.

Your investments do not have to break the bank. You can also tie in networking opportunities wherever possible. Online courses abound right now, and they offer chances to meet with like-minded men and women literally from around the world. Do you have a poor relationship to money?

People who have a poor relationship to money feel poor-no matter how much money they have in the bank. Even as they make more and more money, their stress increases, they save less, and their problems just have more zeroes on them.

This is the world of scarcity in which people feel owned by their money instead of feeling powerful as the owner of their money.

You don’t have to live like this anymore. Follow these 3 steps today to begin creating a more powerful relationship to your money… to truly own your money:

Step 1- Identify your relationship to money

Understand what money means to you. Is it power, control, joy, happiness, freedom, or is it just a way of keeping score? Here are four questions to focus your responses:

How would you describe your relationship to money and your current money management habits?
When you hear the words money, wealth, or rich, what comes to mind?
What did your parents tell you about money?
How do you currently act with money?

Step 2- Compare your answers to the supportive and non-supportive belief criteria.

Were your thoughts and feelings empowering or disempowering? Here are the definitions of Supportive and Non-supportive beliefs:

Supportive beliefs provide encouragement, empowerment and positive feelings.
Non-supportive beliefs can bring disempowerment, helplessness, hopelessness, and panic.

Your answers to the questions above form your Belief Systems to money-affectionately called your “B.S.”-as it is the made-up scripts created over your lifetime.

Here are some examples of non-supportive beliefs:

If I try and I don’t succeed at making money, I’ll be a failure.
I have to work very hard for money and I won’t be able to make money doing what I love.
Making money will take time away from my family and people won’t like me.
I don’t deserve to have a lot of money.
I’ll never have enough no matter how much I make.

Step 3- Consciously upgrade your beliefs

The good news is that there’s an alternative. Even though you don’t have a direct impact on financial markets, you do have 100% impact on your personal beliefs. You can choose to leave your money past in the past starting today.

Make a decision now to “own your money”. Be willing to go to the core of the non-supportive beliefs and recognize that the opposite is truer than the “B.S.” you’ve been holding onto. Consciously choose the contrary, supportive belief.
