Self-worth for Net-worth

Money is often a key ingredient in us realizing our dreams. Both in having the financial means to be, do and have your dream, as well as to actually feel financially secure. When we are not yet where we want to be, and may not be able to even see achievement of these goals in our sight, it can be a stressful state of being.

The first step towards easing that stress is to recognize that it’s not a lack of funds or money management ‘know-how’ which are at the root of the issue.

In fact, these are just the symptoms and products of your inner beliefs about money.

Many people don’t even realize we have these inner beliefs-which we “inherited” from our family and internalized over time-or that these beliefs can hold us back from wealth and financial security.

What’s important for you to know is that these beliefs fall into 2 categories: Supportive and Non-Supportive:

Supportive beliefs provide encouragement, empowerment and positive feelings.

Non-supportive beliefs can bring disempowerment, helplessness, hopelessness, and panic.

The exercises below will help you identify your non-supportive beliefs. So that you can learn how to control them and make more conscious, objective, and smart financial decisions.

To begin to understand your own “B.S.” (Belief System), answer these initial questions:

What does money mean to you?
How would you describe your relationship to money and your current money management habits?
When you hear the words money, wealth, or rich, what comes to mind?
What did your parents tell you about money?
How do you currently act with money?

Now compare your answers to the supportive and non-supportive belief criteria. Were your thoughts and feelings empowering or disempowering? Here are some examples of non-supportive beliefs:

I’m not good at money or math.
If I try and I don’t succeed at making money, I’ll be a failure.
I have to work very hard for money and I won’t be able to make money doing what I love.
If I do what it takes to make a lot of money, it will take time away from my family and people won’t like me.
I don’t deserve to have a lot of money.

Holding onto these non-supportive beliefs can be very destructive-both emotionally and physically-and often sabotages our drive to go after our dreams at all.

Even though most of us don’t have a direct impact on the financial markets, we have 100% impact on our personal beliefs and behaviors about money. DARE to Make the Right Choices

July 30, 2009

Recently, I celebrated my birthday, and as a birthday gift (and for our upcoming wedding anniversary), my husband took me on a cruise to the Polynesian Islands. In addition to the sheer beauty of French Polynesia, I was touched by the way people live. They take the time to enjoy life and each other. And yet, their life is so simple and, not at all governed, by the acquisition of material wealth. Because I speak French fluently, I was able to converse with many of the natives. It was a lot of fun.

It was so great to get away with my husband. It gave us the opportunity to spend some quality time together and to rekindle our passion. Plus it gave me a chance to look at my life in a whole different light. I’m very grateful for it.

It prompted me to write the enclosed post: Dare to Make the Right Choices… even if it means starting over.

DARE TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES

What do we think of when we talk about DARING to make the right choices? Most likely, as Daring Women, we probably think of our career path and our families / intimate relationships. Yes, making the right choices, even late in the game, can liberate us from stagnant careers and no-win situations. No matter how far down the road we have gone with something that makes us unfulfilled or unhappy, the most wonderful thing about life is that if you simply woke up alive, you can choose to claim a do-over.

You can reclaim financial health by ending credit card debt and stopping a career in which you are under earning. You can reclaim love by walking away (or at least distancing yourself) from hurtful and critical relationships. You can reposition yourself and your career by freelancing in areas of expertise that you love. (How many administrators out there have profound problem solving skills and expertise at an endless variety of software applications?)

My point is that life is a new journey every single day, and it is FUELED by the energy and courage it takes when we DARE to make the right choices.

I know this is not easy. It means leaving people or positions that we are often familiar and “safe” with - and it means moving forward without necessarily having a clear view of the future. But I promise you that no matter what happens, when we DARE to make the RIGHT choices about who we give our energy to, whether it be relationships, jobs, money, time - we will ALWAYS reap not only rewards, but more fuel for the next right steps in our journey.

DARE to Make ANY Dream Come True!

Why is it so important to make your dream a reality? What happens to a dream deferred? The unfulfilled dream lingers in the mind, leading to blockage and frustration. Potentialities are put aside in favor of everyday practicalities. It often seems impossible to set aside the time and space necessary to actively pursue the dreams that would lead us to greater satisfaction in our lives. We are so mired in reality and so busy living by our clocks and calendars that we often forget what matters to us. Sounds familiar! Don’t let it be you. I dare you to turn your dreams into reality.

Why are dreams so important? In our very busy lives, taking time to dream seems frivolous. However, if you do not have a dream all you have is your reality. Dreaming is the expression of your heart and soul. It allows you to stop and ask yourself: what do I really want for my live, what’s going to make me happy and fulfilled? Dreaming is the ability to proactively create and design your life the way you want it to be. It is medically proven that people who have passion and dreams live on average 7 to 10 years longer and they tend to be much happier.

What are some of the most common reasons that get in a way of accomplishing our dreams? We let our doubts and fears dominate the air time and we have a tendency to go to strategy too soon. Our mind wants to know where the time, money, contacts or expertise is going to come from. We look at the way our life is and unless we can see clearly how the dream can be accomplished, then we start to doubt ourselves and we tend to compromise the dream down to our reality. And our society does a very good job at reminding us of our reality. How many times do you hear? That is the way it is, face-the facts, that has never been done before, what makes you think you can do that and on and on. Looking at what is root us on the spot like a tree.

How do you overcome some of the obstacles such as time, money, fear and doubt? It is such a story. “No time” or “no money” is not the real objection. The lack of belief in ourselves is what causes us to state something like, “I don’t have time or I don’t have money.” These obstacles are what I call: the “escapes” we all have used before (to ourselves and others) because truthfully we don’t believe we can GET WHAT we WANT (or that we are worthy or deserving).

To overcome those obstacles, it is important to realize that you are not alone. We all have limiting beliefs and fears. Not having enough time or money may be a reality but it’s only a limiting belief. There are usually creative alternatives for handling these issues: bartering services, asking for help, partnering with someone else - whatever the case might be. The ultimate question becomes: are you more committed to your dreams than you are to your reality? You start demonstrating that you are more committed to your dreams by taking actions. And in the actions you will gain confidence and self-esteem. You will never think your way into confidence, gaining confidence is not a mind game, it is an action game. Only by taking risk and taking bold and daring actions will you gaining the confidence you are longing for.

What do I recommend in order to increase the probability of turning your dreams into reality? The people I know that are the most successful at accomplishing their dreams are usually not doing going at it alone. They have learned to articulate their vision with clarity and passion, and have the ability to excite, invite and enroll people to join them. We’re usually much more successful in reaching our goals once we’ve made a commitment to someone else (coach, friend, colleague, family member) and this is why coaching is so effective.

In summary, when you start living your life with intention and purpose, the universe will align with you in ways you’ve never thought possible. It is magical and dreams do come true! Dare to believe and dare to take risk and massive action. The universe rewards action!

These questions force you to come to grips with what you truly want from life. You would be amazed to find out how hard answering those questions can be for so many people and they might be for you.
